Voice over IP (VoIP) technology has the potential to replace traditional telephones—but the technology crossover will only occur as soon as VoIP consistently offers quality and affordability that equals or exceeds traditional options. Global IP Solutions (GIPS) has taken the lead in creating that reality. GIPS products are integrated into VoIP-enabled systems and software applications from both long-time leaders in telecommunications and promising start-ups, including Nortel Networks, Ericsson and Skype.

The company provides complete media processing engines that deliver high-quality audio and video in the newest generation of converged communications devices.

GIPS media-processing technologies enable software applications and network hardware for packet-based, real-time network communications products. The company's solutions overcome some of the most debilitating limitations encountered by PC- and PDA-based softphones, conferencing and collaboration applications, IP phones and gateways and other Internet communications products. By controlling delay, jitter, packet loss, and acoustic and network echo, GIPS products deliver superior quality and robustness that exceed that of cellular/PCS and traditional PSTN phones. GIPS works closely with its partners to help them confidently deploy VoIP services, including voice and video over WiFi and multi-user conferencing.

Where We Come From

From its inception, Global IP Solutions has pioneered the development of voice, and now video, processing technologies made specifically for real-time communications over IP networks. The company was founded by industry-pundits Professor Bastiaan Kleijn and Dr. Roar Hagen. Kleijn began his career with more than a decade working on speech processing for Bell Laboratories. He went on to found GIPS and remains Chief Scientist for the company. Today Kleijn is a Professor at the distinguished Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Roar Hagen began research and development within speech processing and coding in 1989. After successful careers at AT&T Bell Labs and Ericsson Research, Hagen went on to found Global IP Solutions. He remains the companies Chief Technology Officer.

Founded in 1999, GIPS has evolved into a global presence in the VoIP market. The company maintains domestic offices in San Francisco, Boston, and Raleigh, as well as operations in Stockholm, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo. The company, which employs over 85 people, has an employee roster filled with communications engineers and scientists who have pioneered packet-based communications. Global IP Solutions is traded on the Norwegian Over the Counter Exchange.

• GIPS VoiceEngine^TM PC
  This software plug-in is designed to handle all voice-related tasks for VoIP. The solution, which includes the comprehensive suite of GIPS SoundWareTM, gives manufacturers an open, flexible solution that can be easily integrated into their products. GIPS VoiceEngineTM supports existing standards, and offers improved voice quality by the unique configuration of the components and by improved handling of the hardware.  
• GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile 
  A comprehensive, packaged solution specifically designed for Mobile applications. GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile is available in two configurations: GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile for Pocket PC and VoiceEngine Mobile for Symbian.  
• VoiceEngine IP Phone/ATA
  An extension to the world-renowned GIPS VoiceEngine product family. GIPS VoiceEngine Embedded IP Phones is designed for use in CPU based VoIP equipment like hardware IP phones and ATA devices.  
• GIPS VideoeEngine PC
  Combines the power and proven performance of GIPS VoiceEngine with high quality video conferencing support. The GIPS multimedia package revolutionizes the way audio and video soft phones are implemented.  
• GIPS Voice ConferenceEngine
  An extension of VoiceEngineTM, this powerful and complete server-based software plug-in handles all aspects of audio mixing and other voice related tasks in a conference bridge application. The ConferenceEngineTM provides high quality mixing of several audio streams. Based on award-winning solutions and patented technologies, it also ensures minimal delay and excellent audio quality even under adverse network conditions.  
• GIPS MediationEngine
  An advanced server based transcoding and dejittering solution that dramatically improves voice quality of VoIP calls terminated at the PSTN. Through MediationEngine, GIPS VoiceEngine customers can take full advantage of GIPS technology in both directions, improving call quality by providing robustness and delay-saving algorithms closer to the border of an enterprise or ISP network.  

Components:  

• NetEQ is GIPS’ flagship product. This advanced jitter buffer and packet loss concealment unit delivers dramatic improvements in sound quality while minimizing latency for IP telephony systems. This one-sided, embedded solution enables high quality voice over networks, even with poor infrastructure. NetEQ reduces jitter buffer delay 30-80 ms compared to the best alternative solutions and automatically provides a solution to the clock drift problem present in VoIP hardware. NetEQ is codec independent.  
• GIPS Voice Quality EnhancementTM (VQE)
  Improves the quality of VoIP conversations by removing echo and noise, and by adjusting speech levels to achieve a consistent and comfortable listening experience.   
• GIPS Acoustic Echo Cancellation – PC (GIPS AEC PC)
  Has been optimized to eliminate echo caused by acoustic feedback in real-time communications in a PC environment. GIPS AEC is needed in conferencing applications and hands-free environments.  
• GIPS Acoustic Echo Cancellation – IP phone (GIPS AEC IP Phone)
  Is a unique software solution for acoustic echo cancellation for hardware IP phones is optimized to eliminate echo caused by acoustic feedback in real-time communications. This G.167 compliant and highly efficient full duplex speech processing software cancels the acoustic feedback without audible echo or clipping.  
• GIPS Acoustic Echo Suppression (GIPS AES)
  This simple and unique program tackles the inherent problems in PC and PDA devices. It cancels acoustic echo that emerges due to the reflection of the loudspeaker's sound waves from the boundary surfaces, and other objects back to the microphone. GIPS AES complies with G.167.
• GIPS Network Echo Cancellation (NEC) – NEC
  Was developed specifically for gateways and VoIP routers at the edge of a packet network, cancels the echo caused by 4-to-2-wire hybrids. This scalable echo canceller is designed to handle everything from complex carrier class gateways to smaller scale scenarios and IAD gateways.  
• GIPS Network Echo Cancellation (GIPS NEC IAD)
  This efficient speech processing echo cancellation software is designed for use in IAD gateways at the edge of a packet network to cancel 4-2 wire echo conditions. This G.168 compliant solution provides excellent sound quality without audible echo or clipping.

High Quality Codecs:

• iLBC
  Global IP Solutions’s royalty free low-bit rate codec offers high packet-loss robustness. GIPS iLBC delivers speech quality equal to or better than G.729 and G.723.1 and resists packet loss than other low-bit-rate codecs. GIPS iLBC operates at 13.3 kb/s (30 ms frames) and 15.2 kb/s (20 ms frames) and is well suited for dial-up connections.
• iPCM-wb
  This wideband codec offers extreme robustness against packet loss. With better speech quality than other wideband codecs (G.722.1 and G.722.2), iPCM-wb provides better-than-PSTN quality across a wide set of networks, including the public Internet.  
• iSAC
  This wideband, adaptive codec is designed to deliver high quality sound in both high-bit-rate and low-bit-rate conditions. GIPS iSAC makes VoIP communications possible even using a dial-up modem, by automatically adjusting transmission rates to deliver better-than-PSTN voice quality.  
• Enhanced G.711
  GIPS has enhanced the standard G.711 codec. This codec offers extreme packet loss robustness, maintaining PSTN quality when combined with GIPS NetEQ, even when packet loss is up to 30 percent.  
• In addition, GIPS has acquired Espre LSVX patented video codec technology, the industry’s best-in-class video compression technologies. Now, video and voice capabilities are incorporated in all of GIPS products and the company is continually enhancing all of its IP-based applications toward providing the highest quality multimedia experience for users.  
• iPCM-wb
  This wideband codec offers extreme robustness against packet loss. With better speech quality than other wideband codecs (G.722.1 and G.722.2), iPCM-wb provides better-than-PSTN quality across a wide set of networks, including the public Internet.  
• iSAC

• Skype – GIPS supplies all the voice-processing technology in the Skype peer-to-peer softphone, which has had more than 18 million downloads and has garnered numerous accolades for its excellent voice quality. Two Skype partners, Plantronics and Siemens, will also distribute GIPS-enhanced Skype.  
• WebEx Communications – Web communications leader WebEx Communications selected Global IP Solutions’s GIPS VoiceEngine technology to bring enhanced voice quality to its future web communications services, targeted for release later this year.  
• AOL – AOL leverages GIPS VoiceEngine technology to bring enhanced voice quality to its customers.
